How To Buy Conflict Free Diamond Jewelry

Updated on June 29, 2014

What Are Conflict Diamonds?

Conflict diamonds are often referred to as blood or war diamonds. The reason for these names come from the fact that these particular diamonds are mined in areas considered or widely known to be war zones. The diamonds mined from these volatile areas are sold and the profits made from them go into bank rolling insurgencies, rebel army military campaigns and warlord objectives.

Conflict diamonds are generally found in Africa. This is because two thirds of the world's extracted diamonds come from Africa. Some of Africa's worst atrocities came about due to conflict diamonds, costing thousands even millions of lives which is very tragic for those living in those countries.

The Kimberly Process and Conflict Diamonds

What Is the Kimberly Process?

In the fight against the sale of conflict diamonds the Kimberly Process (KP) was established. It set up in January 2003. Participating countries are required to put in place national legislation, institutions; export/import and internal control; commitment, transparency and exchange of statistical data in order to aid the prevention of conflict diamonds.

Member countries are only able to legally trade with countries that have met the requirements as stated in the in the scheme and international shipments of their rough diamonds have to be accompanied with a Kimberly Process certificate guaranteeing that they are conflict free.

The Kimberly Process is open and voluntary to all countries that are willing and have the ability to implement the schemes requirements. The Kimberly Process has 54 participants who represent 80 countries. The EU and its member countries count as a single participant. The international diamond industry is also is represented in the Kimberly Process scheme, Partnership-Africa Canada represents civil societies and organizations, both institutions have played a major role in the Kimberly Process scheme since its inception.

How To Avoid Buying a Conflict Diamond

Some of the ways in which diamond lovers can purchase non-conflict diamonds is by:

Doing a background check on diamond purchases; Diamonds go through a process from the time they are mined to the time they arrive at the retail store. These processes include source checking, sealing, and Kimberly Process certification giving them a unique serial number. If the diamond has not gone through these processes and lacks a certificate then there should be no purchase as more so than not, such diamonds are conflict diamonds.

Knowledge about the Kimberly Process; All persons who regularly deal in the purchase of diamonds need to be fully aware of and conversant with the Kimberly Process as it is fundamental in preventing the flow of conflict diamonds.

System of warranties; Retailers who purchase diamonds and keep them in their possession have the responsibility of following the system of warranties. These records are open for auditing by certain government agencies, as a customer one should know if their favorite jeweler has been vetted by the government to legally sell diamonds and if so then most likely the jeweler's diamonds are conflict free.

Questioning your jeweler; Customers should know the right questions to ask and the proper format in which to ask them in order to ascertain if the diamonds being sold to them are conflict free and legitimate.
